The famous Christmas song, “Do
You Hear What I Hear?” was a prayer for peace written during the Cuban Missile
Crisis in 1962. The song was written by
a husband and wife team Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne Baker in response to the crisis
in which the Russians installed nuclear missiles within easy striking distance
of the United States who in response threatened military intervention. Americans were anticipating nuclear conflict.
The last verse ends with a prayer, “Pray
for peace, people everywhere….the Child…will bring us goodness and light.”
