The
UN passed a non-binding resolution on Thursday (results, 128-9), which rejected
the US decision to move its Embassy to Jerusalem. The resolution was approved even after
President Trump had warned he would cut aid to countries that voted against the
US decision. Nikki Haley stated that “no
vote in the United Nations will make any difference” concerning the US decision
to move its Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
She also hinted that the US will remember the UN resolution when it is
called upon in the future to make the “world’s largest contribution to the
United Nations.” David Harris, who is
the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee, was dismayed by the
enormous support for the UN resolution that condemned the US recognition of
Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Harris
argued that the UN had sided with President Abbas’s attempt to internationalize
the conflict between Palestinians and Israel instead of negotiating directly
with Israel.

It is not too surprising that the nearest neighbors of Israel (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia) are opposed to the Jerusalem move and voted for the UN resolution. However, there were nine nations that voted against it (the United States, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo). There were 35 nations who abstained from the vote: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Fiji, Haiti, Hungary, Jamaica, Kiribati, Latvia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Rwanda, Solomon Islands, South Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu.
