July 18, 2017 (Update)

Israeli-Arab members of the Knesset arrived at the Lions Gate in order to join the Palestinians for evening prayer outside the Temple Mount and to show support for the protesters.  The members are Juma Azbarga, Osama Sa’adi, Ahmad Tibi, Jamal Zahalka, and Hanin Zoabi.  Ahmad Tibi is to have said, “The metal detectors must be removed, they cause great unrest and in fact create a new reality that hurts the status quo….Netanyahu is the one who insists on this provocation, and he will bear the responsibility to any escalation here or in the region. The entire Arab world is up in arms. In addition to hurting the Palestinian people, this is hurting Jordan's special authority over the holy places….I don't know how exactly people can tolerate such a situation, in which they pray under siege by dozens of police, Special Forces and military….This isn't just an occupation, it's also humiliation. We won't accept the new arrangement of electronic gates. We refuse any new security arrangement. We don't need security in our place."

  1. What is perplexing to me is that five people were killed on the Temple Mount last Friday. This seems like a weighty stone that neither side is able and willing to accept entirely. Prime Minister Netanyahu changes things and increases security. Ahmad Tibi seems to want to continue as though nothing has changed except the added security measures. Yet, five people lost their lives.

  2. CORRECTION: The three attackers were killed on the Temple Mount. The two Israeli-Druze officers were shot near the Lions Gate, transferred to Mount Scopus, where they were declared dead.
