Mughrabi Gate

Do you remember when Muslims protested after Israel installed metal detectors?  Well in a twist of irony, the Israeli High Court of Justice has ordered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reply to a petition requested by Itamar Ben Gvir, a lawyer who claims that the Israeli government is discriminating against non-Muslims.   Presently, Muslims have free access to the Temple Mount through ten gates near the Muslim quarter.  However, non-Muslims are required to enter through the Mughrabi Gate, the only gate through which they must pass and only after passing through a metal detector.  The document filed with the court argues that, “this petition is based on the principle of equality and against the unfair policy that discriminates against Jews and tourists and in favor of Muslims.”  Michael Ben Ari, Baruch Marzel, and Bentzi Gopstein support the petition.  The government has 50 days to respond.

The Mughrabi Gate with its long wooded entrance.  The metal detector is in the little gray building with three windows.  I went through the detector on three different occasions.

  1. On a side note: Bentzi Gopstein and Michael Ben Ari have been highly critical of Christ and Christians in the past. It is reported that Michael destroyed a copy of the New Testament back in 2012. In 2015, Bentzi Gopstein seemed to entertain the idea that burning Christian churches in Israel might be acceptable based on the Jewish scholar Maimonides.
